Founded in 1879 by Nathan Weston Blanchard and incorporated on April 22, 1902, Santa Paula boasts a rich history in the oil industry, with numerous oil wells dotting its landscape. The city is famous for its picturesque downtown area, which showcases well-preserved buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 

In 1893, the Limoneira Company was founded in Santa Paula, and it played a pivotal role in shaping the citrus industry in the region. The company became one of the largest lemon producers in the world and continues to be a major citrus grower in the area to this day.
